From the author of ?Tales from Manger Inn,? a collection of unforgettable memories about horseback riding and farm life, A Look Through My Eyes is a stunning real-life saga of family and financial, political and spiritual battles set against the backdrop of the Second World War. Dawn Vandenberg?s newly published book follows the life of a man who struggled to survive despite pressures from the family, poverty, the Nazi, and even from Christianity.
Rem Vandenberg was born in 1937 in the Netherlands just before the onslaught of World War II. His youth was a struggle to exist under the German occupation and in combating the depravation of poverty. Added to these hardships was the ongoing personal battle he fought daily in accepting the doctrines of the Roman Catholic Church, which were heavily imposed on him by the uncompromising adult belief of the time.
Inspired by his authoritarian father, Rem accepted that he had to help support the family at a young age. With a strong desire to be free of the bonds restricting him from freedom of expression and thought, Rem was often on the punitive end of the disciple rod, both at school and home. Through her endless love, compassion and faith, Rem?s mother was able to engulf the whole family under her mantle of love and bind them together into a caring family unit.
At the age of 16, driven by the spirit of adventure, Rem left home and joined the merchant navy. On sailing into his first Australian port his desire to stay in Australia took over. He jumped ship and went inland. He was finally picked up by the law and experienced a short jail sentence before being deported back to Holland. His love for Australia was strong and within two years he returned as a legal migrant and still lives in his beloved land today.
Dramatically inspiring, A Look Through My Eyes is a story overflowing with life changing lessons. It teaches readers that there is never a barrier?not money, family, war nor religion?strong enough to prevent them from reaching their dreams, if they perseveringly put their heart, mind and soul to achieving them.

This new release from Dog Ear Publishing tackles the serious subject of domestic violence in homes of young children. A 4-year-old girl serves as the heroine of this story, which is aimed at inspiring discussion after children see domestic violence.
Four-year-old Ibby is like most other preschoolers: She has a mom who takes her to preschool, lots of friends and loving grandparents. She also has typical emotions for a young girl, feeling pretty when wearing her grandmother?s hat and feeling happy when she jumps in the leaves, notes this new book from Dog Ear Publishing. It?s what she feels when her daddy gets mad and what happens when he does that sets this young girl apart from her peers.
?Ibby?s Feelings,? designed to be read out loud with young children, focuses on a young girl who sees domestic violence in her home; Ibby?s father hits his wife hard enough to send her to the hospital. Once again, Ibby?s feelings turn from happiness to fear and sadness. The author, who saw domestic violence herself when young, offers a story that paves the way for adults and children to talk about the shame, rage, fear and pain domestic violence brings, sometimes without warning.
The story, told in simple words, can help adults who work with children and help children to discuss their feelings. Ultimately, the book is a ?cry for help from the young child who is witnessing and/or experiencing domestic violence, and the wounded child who lives within adults who witnessed or experienced domestic violence as children,? the author writes.
Author Baaqia Uqdah spent more than 35 years caring for young children and educating them, including directing a child care center and training teachers. After retirement, she served as a domestic violence victims advocate. She is pursuing a domestic violence specialist certification in New Jersey, focusing on the impact of domestic violence on very young children. The book grew from her work with students expressing their feelings with language arts and her realization of the power of a children?s book to teach adults.
