In the pages of Charles B. Shanks, Jr.?s new book, The Light ($ 30.99, paperback, 978-1-62419-913-4; $ 9.99, e-book, 978-1-62419-914-1) readers will meet a young man from the mountains of East Tennessee, who comes of age during the Civil War. He struggles with his desire for materialism versus the comforts of home and hearth. Unusual circumstances compel him to join the Union army, but when the war ends he returns home and everything has changed.
?The mission of The Light is to convey a life message by using daily activities, situations, and unusual circumstances to stress the differences between spiritual light and the darkness of sin nature,? states the author. ?The storyline has been in process for twenty years. It includes much family heritage passed down for generations. The vernacular is that of the local mountain people of the period and was spoken by my family.?
Charles B. Shanks, Jr. served in the United States Air Force where he developed his love of freedom and country. He is a graduate of East Tennessee State University with a BSN in Nursing and Health Sciences. He worked for more than thirty years in local emergency medical services.
After retirement, he developed his interest in writing, which led to this book. Growing up under the culture and influence of the strong-willed people living in the mountains of East Tennessee has been paramount in his current appreciation for family values and deep sense of patriotism.
